Exposing the Media
The unit introduces students to the news media. Initially the concept of ‘What is news?' is discussed and students analyse the delivery of news through the mediums of television, newspaper, radio and the Internet. The unit evolves into focusing on the current and controversial topic of the refugees and the ‘Pacific Solution'.

Students complete a novel study of Bram Stoker's Dracula. It is based on the abridged version of Dracula to support the learning needs of students.

Verona School
Macbeth
Students are exposed to Shakespeare and explore the language used, historical aspects, themes and characters.They take part in literacy group lessons that give them to opportunity to expand their language and comprehension skills. Shakespeare is part of the curriculum for stage 5. The study of Macbeth, although challenging, has many themes that are current in today's world, including conspiracy and violence.

Poetry
Students are exposed to a variety of poems, including the new aged ‘slam poetry'. Students begin to expand their vocabulary and literacy skills to incorporate a number of elements in a poem. Students then move to raps and discuss how most poems and raps represent the person's feelings.
